Comex Answers All Of Our Questions Before Joining Apple

Of Course you have heard that Comex is joining Apple. All of us have questions in our minds that you surely wants answers for. Comex has decided to Answer all of these questions via a thread on Reddit.
comex
After your internship with Apple and after iOS 5 is officially released, will you continue to support the jailbreak community by providing exploits? (nishnasty)
Comex: No. (But I’ll want to jailbreak my phone, so I hope someone finds them :p)
Why an intern position though? It seems like you could carry a regular position at apple. (AstroZombie138)
Comex: I don’t know if I’d want to do that- I’ve never had a job before and I don’t know what it’s like- and I intend to go back to college soon.
How has the core jailbreak dev teams responded to you going to work for apple? (AstroZombie138)
Comex: Mostly with congratulations.
Have you made any money from the [jailbreak] scene? (jamesvdm)Comex: I’ve made a good amount of money through donations, which is mostly being used to help pay for college. JailbreakMe 2.0 was like $40,000; 3.0 was $15,000 (not quite sure why it decreased).
The jailbreak community took a huge hit when you left. Do you think the active players can outsmart you now that you’re playing for the other team, or are you Apple’s final solution to their jailbreak problem? (bitterorca)
Comex: There are a lot of smart people working for Apple already; maybe I can help, but I doubt I can stop people from finding exploits.
As a huge open book for them to steal take ideas from. (Emc1683)
Comex: I certainly don’t mind. Jailbreak community puts an idea in front of people with a crappy implementation; Apple polishes it to the point where it can be an OS feature. I don’t know whether Apple actually pays attention to jailbreak apps, but see App Store, copy and paste, multitasking, etc…
Why did you choose to get involved in specifically the iPhone jailbreaking scene, what was it attracted you to the iPhone? (Colonel_Ham_Sandwich)
Comex: I had one… and it was a device that (a) had a lot of functionality, (b) had a nice and flexible UNIX OS, (c) already had an active homebrew community, and (d) was really cool. :p
Did you always set out to be a hacker or was it just something that interested you and found you had a [knack] for? (Colonel_Ham_Sandwich)
Comex: I never wanted to be a black hat hacker, but I did enjoy hacking (originally SQL injection and crap) as a natural extension of programming.
Finally, in regards to the PDF bug used for the JailbreakMe.com jailbreak, where on earth did you get the brilliant idea for it? (Colonel_Ham_Sandwich)
Comex: FreeType was one of the less studied open source components of iOS.
Are you optimistic about the future of the iOS platform? What features are you looking forward to next? (iconoclaus)
Comex: My personal opinion: it will probably continue to beat the pants off its competitors in performance for a while yet, and Apple’s “take your time but do it right” policy on features will probably continue to make it a pleasure to use. But I’m impatient: other platforms (WebOS) have a lot of fun stuff with no real equivalent in iOS.
Do you have any regrets? (bitterorca)
Comex: I should have worked on these jailbreaks more consistently, and released them more quickly; I’ve had several exploits fixed on me that could have been used in a jailbreak if I was quicker at packaging.
Will the current jailbreaks and/or the site disappear? (UntilWeLand)
Comex: No, I’ll hand them over to MuscleNerd or chpwn or whoever will take care of them.
Your thoughts on Steve Jobs’ departure? (MDevonL)
Comex: Really a shame; I was hoping to meet him some day, and, company direction aside, keynotes won’t be as entertaining without him.
What, besides money, made you flip to the other side? (Clavis_Apocalypticae)
Comex: It’s not about money. A large part of my motivation to jailbreak was always the challenge; the internship will be a new sort of challenge.
Comex, Thanks for the amazing work you have already done. All the Jailbreak Community will be missing you.

Jailbreak iOS 5: what will happen to JailbreakMe 4.0

Earlier last week Nicholas Allegra, better known as Comex around the jailbreaking community, announced that he will joint Apple as a security analyst.
Comex is very famous for his JailbreakMe tool which is the easiest userland method to jailbreak your iPhone, iPad and iPod touch as well as, up to date, the only available tool to successfully jailbreak the iPad 2.
Ever since the news broke, everyone’s question in mind has been ‘What’s going to happen to JailbreakMe?” Certainly he cannot work as a security expert for Apple during the day and be a jailbreaker at night, nor can fail to expose security flaws present in Apple’s iOS.JailbreakMe 4.0
With iOS 5 due to be released in October, the jailbreaking community is certainly hoping to see an updated version of the JailbreakMe tool.
Comex twitted on Sunday that he’s “hoping @MuscleNerd will make JailbreakMe 4.” which hints us that Comex may have handled the project to MuscleNerd.
Don’t take it as a sure thing but at least we know there’s an intention to carry on the amazing tool.

Forbes Gives An Insider’s Look At Comex’s Life, The 19-Year-Old iPhone Hacker Who Keeps Outsmarting Apple

If you’re into the iOS hacking and development scene, then you’ve probably heard of Comex, a prominent member of the iOS jailbreaking community. While he enjoys keeping his identity at a low profile online, he agreed to be interviewed by Forbes, where he revealed his real name and current life situation. Curious? Read on.
Comex iPhone
Until today, all we had seen from Comex were his frequent tweets on his Twitter account (@comex) where he was always too careful not to share any personal information, presumably to avoid being tracked down by Apple’s lawyers. Forbes has now managed to get a hold of him and ask some personal questions. In real life, Comex is a 19-year-old living with his parents in Chappaqua, New York, where he periodically takes the iOS community by storm with his newest discoveries. Nicholas Allegra, as he’s called in real life, mostly spends his days finding vulnerabilities in Apple’s code and releasing exploits in the form of tools anyone with basic skills can use. Allegra couldn’t have said it better:
It feels like editing an English paper, […] You just go through and look for errors. I don’t know why I seem to be so effective at it.
If you’re not yet aware, Comex is the author of JailbreakMe, an incredibly easy web-onlyjailbreaking tool for the iPhone, iPod touch and iPad, even the iPad 2, which can’t currently be jailbroken using any other method. JailbreakMe, unlike other tools, doesn’t require a computer connection or major knowledge on how iOS operates since it relies on a PDF exploit found inMobile Safari: just by pointing the browser to JailbreakMe’s website and following the easy on-screen instructions, any device running iOS 4.3.3 can be hacked in a matter of seconds. If you’d like to perform this jailbreak, you can read our comprehensive guide. In just nine days, the tool was used by as many as 1.4 million people, and by about 600,000 since then, once the vulnerability that allowed this easy jailbreak was patched by Apple.
As young as 9, Allegra had taught himself the Visual Basic programming language through online tutorials. While he’s now over twice that age and his work has become a lot more complex, he intends to keep offering his work free of charge, even though he accepts donations.
By the time I took a computer science class in high school, I already knew everything,
Nicholas has expressed his concern for the amount of vulnerabilities present in commercial software, since all exploits can be used for good and for evil. While Allegra uses his knowledge for good, he recognizes that many could take advantage of the same software to cause great harm:
I use the same phone as everyone else, and it’s totally insecure.
Did we mention that this genius is looking for an internship? With this unprecedented exposure, could Apple perhaps grant him that wish like it did with another developer earlier this year?
